- The call
- The gap under the door is a finger wide at one end and nothing at the other. The door itself looks straight, but the floor drops away toward the corner where the slab has settled, and drafts pour through the wedge.

Every mild afternoon the snow melts off the car, runs to the door, and by morning the rubber strip along the bottom is frozen to the concrete. Last week the opener lifted the door and left half the seal on the floor.
The bottom seal, called an astragal in the trade, is the flexible strip along the underside of the lowest door section that squashes against the floor when the door closes. On most steel doors it is a U-shaped vinyl or rubber profile whose two edges slide into the channels of a retainer fixed to the bottom rail; on wood doors it is often a flat angled strip nailed in place. Replacing it means matching that retainer and profile, fitting a fresh seal the full width of the door, and confirming it meets the floor in one continuous line so light, drafts, water and pests lose their route in.

Scene 1
A gap that is wider at one corner is often the door rather than the seal. The technician checks that the door sits square in the opening by comparing the bottom edge to the floor at both ends and looking at how each lift cable wraps its drum. A stretched cable, a drum that has crept on its shaft or uneven spring tension drops one corner a centimetre or two, and setting the door level is what closes that wedge. If the door is out of level, the adjustment is explained as its own item and done first, and the seal is then sized to the gap that remains. Getting the order right saves fitting a seal twice.
Scene 2
The clamps come off, the opener is reconnected, and the door is run closed under power while the technician watches the bottom edge meet the floor. The down limit is adjusted so the seal compresses gently along its full length without the section bowing, and the force setting is checked so the door settles onto the new, taller strip without reversing. From inside with the lights off, the floor line is checked again for daylight. The reversing test with a 38 mm (1.5 in) solid object, or a 2x4 laid flat under the door, and the photo-eye test finish the visit, and you are shown the door closing before the ladder is packed.
Scene 3
Before leaving, the technician tells you what went on the door: the seal profile, whether T, bead or bulb, its width and height, the material, the door width it was cut for, and whether the retainer was renewed. Write this on a card by the opener or inside the manual. Bottom seals wear out on a schedule of years rather than decades, and knowing the profile means the next one can be ordered and fitted without measuring from scratch. If a threshold seal was added, its length and type belong on the same card.

Yes, and winter is when most people notice they need one. Vinyl is stiffer in the cold, so the technician keeps the new roll warm until it is fed and takes a little longer working it across the channels. A seal frozen to the floor is freed by hand first. The door is then closed onto the new strip and the opener reset exactly as in summer, and the garage is sealed for the rest of the season.
Many homeowners do, and a technician's value lies in the parts that go wrong: identifying the exact profile so the seal seats, freeing a strip that has fused into its channel, spotting a retainer or door-level problem behind the gap, and resetting the opener's limit and force so the door lands gently and still reverses on an obstruction. If you would rather have it measured, fitted and tested in one go, that is what the visit is for.
The width of the door and whether it is a single or double; what is getting in, whether light, drafts, water, snow or pests, and where along the door; whether the gap is even or worse at one end; the door material; and a photo of the end of the bottom section showing the retainer and seal. Mention if the seal has frozen to the floor or if the door has been reversing before it closes.
